| Welcome
to the Ancient Greek Coins page.
An
ancient coin compresses the art and culture of its time in just a few
millimeters of metal. A coin also reveals the political climate and economy
of its region. The engravers realized their discerning vision through
excellent carving skills. However, a few specially talented individuals
also had artistic vision: they executed some of the most artistic miniature
works of art of all time—comparable in strength and beauty to the
monumental bronze and stone sculptures of their historical period. In
the last quarter of the fifth century B.C., these artists transformed
the coinage of Sicily and the nearby regions. Aware of their contribution
to history and to art, they engraved their names or initials on the coins,
indicating a self-assurance that had sparked a renaissance joining individual
vision with experimental change.
